For its higher education role, the Agap joint research unit is attached to the French National Institute of Higher Education in Agricultural Sciences-South of France (Montpellier SupAgro), a state-owned scientific, cultural and professional establishment (EPSCP), under the joint authority of the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Higher Education.

It hosts ten or so researcher-teachers from that establishment, and a lecturer from the University of Montpellier.

With the involvement of different teams in the Unit, complementary skills can be brought into play for these training missions, from initial training (degree, engineer, MSc, PhD) to further education and training, along with the hosting of foreign students and researchers in its research laboratories.

The disciplinary fields covered are primarily the methodology of Mediterranean and tropical plant breeding, structural and comparative genomics, diversity analysis and management, physiological, molecular and genetic analysis of plant adaptive mechanisms, modelling of plant development depending on genetic  and environmental constraints, cell biology and genetic engineering, along with bioinformatics and biostatistics applied to these fields.
