GenomeHarvest, Project Closing Conference: Tools Harvest Time

The closing conference of the GenomeHarvest flagship project of Agropolis Fondation will take place on the afternoons of June 23rd and 24th.
Looking at crops with a multiple genomic foundation, such as banana, citrus, coffee or rice, we have developed bioinformatics methods and tools that shed new light on the dynamics of genetic diversity.
These may be relevant and applicable for many other species

The project built on the recent availabilities of crop reference genome sequences together with the current possibility for massive resequencing data production. This has opened new opportunities to understand with unprecedented resolution, the organization and dynamics of these genomes and the related keys to a more efficient exploitation of their diversity in breeding programs. However, this also brought up new challenges since the full exploitation of these data requires development of new biomathematic / bioinformatic concepts, methods and tools.

The objective of the project was to establish a collaborative framework between biomathematicist/bioinformaticist and genomicist/geneticist to jointly elaborate and formalize strategies and to develop methods and tools. We have particularly focused on aspects related to the frequent inter(sub)specific events involved in the history of crops and developed methodologies to decipher their inter(sub)specific genome structure and its impact on character transmission.

The project was based on a few tropical and Mediterranean crops including citrus, banana, rice and coffee. The tools developed are expected to be useful for many crop plants.
