Joël Romaric Nguepjop has just been recruited in UMR Agap

Romaric joined the team DDSE (Dynamics of Diversity, Societies and Environments) team on July 15, 2020 as a molecular geneticist researcher in plant breeding. Initially based in Montpellier to build his project, an assignment at Ceraas (Senegal) is then envisaged to participate in projects on groundnut and cowpea and contribute to the training and support of selection programs of partner countries around the partnership platform, DP IAVAO (Innovation and Varietal Improvement in West Africa).

Romaric has a diversified academic background and 10 years of scientific research experience acquired mainly in Central and West Africa.

His areas of expertise cover molecular genetics, genomics and tropical plant breeding. Its PhD from the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar in 2016 has focused on the use of wild species for genetic analysis and improvement of cultivated groundnut. He has also studied the meiotic behavior and structure of the tetraploid genome of groundnut and developed tools and genetic materials to detect and transfer into elite gene pools wild alleles of agronomic interest (improved yields, disease resistance, drought tolerance, etc.).

Romaric will explore innovative lines of research integrating the agro-ecological transition process, taking into account the optimization of nitrogen-fixing symbiosis in groundnut and cowpea improvement programs.

In conjunction with partners in the field of plant breeding, Romaric's activities will be integrated into several ongoing projects such as DeSIRA-ABEE, Peanut Innovation Lab or Cowpea Square, thus contributing to varietal innovation in a context of climate change adaptation and ecological intensification.
