Lucile Toniutti has just been hired in the Joint Research Unit AGAP

Lucile Toniutti joined the Banana genetics and breeding (GABA) team as a researcher in genetic improvement on June 1, 2020. Initially based in Montpellier, she will then be assigned to Guadeloupe where she will collaborate on projects currently being developed on bananas.

After training as an agricultural engineer, Lucile specialized in Mediterranean and tropical plant breeding and plant engineering at Montpellier SupAgro. She did her thesis at CIRAD in the CoffeeAdapt team of the Interaction Plante Micro-organisme (IPME) research unit, funded by a CIFRE Nestlé grant. Her work aimed to understand how genotypic and environmental factors, by impacting the health of the coffee tree, influence the incidence of rust, and then to study the underlying molecular mechanisms. She then joined the World Coffee Research (WCR) as a researcher in genetics and genomics for coffee varietal improvement. Her work revolved around two main areas: (i) setting up and monitoring Arabica improvement platforms in East Africa and Central America; (ii) participating in numerous collaborative research projects involving partners from the North and the South, particularly on the characterisation of Coffea arabica diversity and the search for male sterility markers using an association genetics approach.

Within the GABA team and in close collaboration with the SEG team, Lucile's research activities are part of projects currently under development aimed at identifying the genetic bases of traits of interest using association genetics and QTL research approaches. They are also intended to optimize varietal creation strategies and selection methods adapted to the biological constraints of bananas, both in selection and in the pre-breeding phase.
In her free time, Lucile enjoys reading, hiking and travelling.
