Rice and its unsuspected genetic diversity
The genetic diversity of 3010 rice varieties has been analysed. This work, published on 25 April in Nature, was conducted by an international consortium including CIRAD. The study revealed very substantial genetic diversity, notably linked to the geographical origin of the different varieties and correlated to the adaptation capacities of the crop.
This is a godsend in these times of global change, when adaptation is a major issue. These results represent the largest set of documented genomic variations for a cultivated species. They are available on open access, making them a valuable tool for breeders all over the world.
