UMR Agap Institute is recruiting a rice breeder using participatory approaches

Since October 1, 2021, Sergio Antonio CASTRO PACHECO has joined the Genetics and Variety innovation (GIV) team and is posted in Montpellier.

My background

I was born and raised in beautiful Costa Rica, where I graduated as an Agronomy Engineer, and also as a Political Scientist. During 3 years I worked in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of the University of Costa Rica, developing research topics such as tolerance to UV radiation in Mesoamerican lines of corn and also on the mapping of QTLs for yield components in papaya, among others.
Afterwards, I worked as the link between the Physiology Laboratory of the same university and a private coffee farm engaged with research. In this context, we developed protocols for the prediction of flowering through the water potential of the coffee tree, as well as in the visual estimation of the Leaf Area Index.
In 2019, I was accepted in the Erasmus Mundus program in Plant Breeding, which led me to study at Uni LaSalle Beauvais and the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Before being recruited by CIRAD, I worked in Italy with Rete Semi Rurali, a farmers' seed network that develops participatory, evolutionary and decentralized breeding programs for wheat, rice and tomato.

My passions

are human relationships, sustainable agriculture and learning new things. I am also strongly inspired by music and nature.

Small anectode

When I was young, I had my wallet stolen by a small tropical monkey (Cebus capucinus). He gave it back to me a few minutes later.
