UMR Agap Institute presents at the Symposium «Salute e tempi di agrumi»

The Structure évolutive des agrumes, polyploïdie et amélioration génétique (SEAPAG) team from UMR Agap Institut took part in a symposium dedicated to the health uses of citrus fruits, « Salute e tempi di agrumi », organized by the Careggi University Hospital in Florence (Italy).

A day devoted to scientific presentations covering different areas of citrus use, from basic research to the nutrition and health industry, from historical contexts to medical sciences, with many possible applications. Without neglecting the cultural, culinary and cosmetic aspects. Numerous avenues for reflection have been suggested for health professionals and non-specialists alike.
After an introduction to the historical, geographical and genetic origins of citrus fruits by Franck CURK, INRAE engineer from SEAPAG team, various presentations were given, including:

  • the use of citron (Citrus medica) in various contexts, including health,
  • the use of bergamot essential oil (Citrus x lemon var. bergamia) to manage behavioral and psychological symptoms in patients suffering from severe dementia,
  • or the use of bergamot extracts to improve human health in space,
  • the important role of citrus fruits in the Mediterranean diet,
  • and the presence of citrus-based substances on the list of banned doping products.
