A report from TF1 - Biodiversity: the future is in the seeds

How to adapt to global warming? Which varieties to choose or create for tomorrow and for which regions of the world? Which plants will resist in 50 or 100 years?

This is what the researchers of the UMR Agap Institut are working on by testing the seeds kept at ARCAD and in the Abiophen greenhouse.
In this report, you can discover the largest cold room in Europe: 9 meters high and 15 meters wide, fully automated. In the 1,500 drawers, 60,000 seed samples from all over the world, including wheat, barley, corn and sorghum, are stored at 4°C and very low humidity. Paule Teres, head of the GAMéT biological resource center in Montpellier, presents the different varieties conserved, some of which have been around for a very long time.

Temperature variation, drought tolerance, disease resistance, carbon dioxide increase, new associations, diversity dynamics... these are all avenues of exploration for adapting plants and systems to climate change. By conserving and characterizing them, the BRC is protecting the food of the future. It works with farmers and research institutes around the world. The strength of this center is experimentation, as practiced in the Abiophen greenhouse, where we test the behavior of this diversity under future climate conditions!
The work put in place to anticipate these adaptations thus aims to offer the largest possible number of varieties to future farmers.
A report broadcast on the TF1 news on June 26, 2022 will tell you more.
