Genetic control of flowering in greater yam (Dioscorea alata L.)
13/04/2021
In Asian yam, a major genetic barrier to flowering was located on chromosome 1 and genetic sex determination of the XX/XY type was confirmed. This is located on chromosome 6. The results of this study could facilitate the design of future promising parental combinations in D. alata breeding programs. They also open new avenues to better understand the biology of yam reproduction and diversification.

Conventional coconut breeding is a lenghty process requiring observing large number of trees for more than 15 years. A collaboration between CIRAD (France), CNRA (Côte d'Ivoire) and CRI-CATAS (China) resulted in the first chromosome scale assembly of the coconut genome. It will contribute to improving coconut breeding accuracy while requiring smaller surfaces and shorter generations.
