Montpellier GAMET Biological Resource Centre

Context and issues

Last update: 27 November 2023

Biological resource centers (BRCs) bring together collections of biological samples (seeds, cells, blood, parasites, etc.) and the associated information (geographical origin, identification, clinical and legal data, etc.). A veritable scientific heritage, these collections collections and resources are also indispensable supports for a wide range of research biodiversity, health and agronomy research.

For over 20 years, the CRBs now belonging to UMR Agap Institute have been distributing rice, sorghum, fonio, cotton, cowpea, groundnut, maize and Medicago seeds, as well as forestry resources, peanuts, maize, Medicago and forestry resources, according to procedures that guarantee the traceability of exchanged material.

Specific structures of primary importance for research and its applications

The CRB GAMéT is the result of the merger of CIRAD, CRB Tropicales with INRAE's CRB Maïs and Medicago  within the ARCAD building from October 2020. These biological are made up of scientific teams, administrative support teams and specific equipment to enable conservation of samples and computer processing data processing. To date, the Montpellier Biological Resource Center has gradually progressively developed important reference collections (rice, sorghum, maize), enabling the study of biodiversity and its applications in agronomy.

The CRB GAMéT is certified to ISO9001v15 on August 1, 2023 for the «Introduction, validation, conservation, multiplication and distribution of corn, rice, cotton and sorghum seeds ». It is a member of the Plants pillar of the RARe consortium.

It has been accredited by the Groupement d'Intérêt Scientifique Ibisa since 11/27/23 for a period of 2 years, and is thus recognized within the network of agronomic BRCs of interest.

Major issues

GAMET BRC houses plant collections that represent the diversity of genetic material contained in traditional varieties and modern cultivars, in plant material used by breeders and in wild relatives of crops. This diversity is a priceless heritage whose preservation is a key strategic issue for all vital activities, especially for plant breeding facing agronomic challenges.

To best fulfill its mission, Montpellier TBRC must meet the high standards of quality and expertise required by the international scientific community and industry for the delivery of biological materials and information. This requires the monitoring of a strict quality policy. It must also comply with the rules controlling access to genetic resources and their transfer, in order to best implement the existing regulations, including those defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity and by the health and biosafety regulations.

All our resources are accessible via our online catalogs and can be viewed on the Florilège portal.
